The School

Eastside Academy is an independent, alternative, Christian high school in Bellevue, Washington. We enroll approximately 40 students who have not found value or success in traditional school settings. We help students restore trust, purpose, and hope through meaningful learning, licensed counseling & recovery, and – for those who need it – housing.

The Role

The Counseling Internship provides the opportunity to support EA students through individual and group therapy. EA interns are valued members of the staff, invited to participate in and contribute to the school’s overall strategies to improve student outcomes. Interns will be exposed to EA’s unique culture which combines student learning, mental health, and residential life in an integrated model of support arising from the same foundation.

EA is committed to providing a positive experience for our interns. We will provide:

  • support and feedback about your counseling abilities through weekly supervision.
  • books, worksheets, and other curricula to use (if desired).
  • training in case notes, reporting, mental health topics and any other relevant issues that arise over the year.
  • the clinical hours needed to successfully complete the licensure process.

  • a dedicated private office and EA email and Microsoft Teams account.

Attributes and Qualifications

  • Skilled in identifying problems, resolving conflict, and implementing solutions to complex challenges.
  • Passionate about building relationships with students that result in growth and accountability.
  • Willingness to operate within EA’s established frameworks and commitments.
  • Empathetic, sociable, and highly diplomatic.
  • Strong written and oral communication.
  • Current and ongoing enrollment in a Master’s level Counseling program.
  • Valid/Current First Aid and CPR Certification (provided).
  • Clearance from Criminal Justice fingerprint/Background Clearance.
 

Essential Functions of the Position

  • Equip students to view their pursuit of mental health as a function of their spiritual well-being and an opportunity to shape their hearts and develop their unique gifts.
  • Encourage students to develop a deeper understanding of God through the lens of the counseling and therapy. Actively model that the Eastside Academy staff is a fellowship of Christians growing together in their faith.
  • Help students embrace the school’s core approach to learning and personal growth, while also celebrating students’ personal creativity, autonomy and style.
  • Align and integrate counseling practices with school’s overall approach to student learning and development, seeking to use classroom learning to strengthen student mental health.
  • Provide individual counseling services, including written care plans and progress notes, on a weekly basis for high school students as scheduled by the EA Director of Counseling.
  • In cooperation with EA Counseling staff, facilitate regular group therapy sessions.
  • Support the Director of Counseling in the collection, analysis, and use of data showing student mental health outcomes.
  • Meet weekly with the EA Director of Counseling.
  • Meet weekly with the internship clinical supervisor.
  • Respond proactively to email and phone calls from families and staff members.
  • Follow all legal requirements and school policies guiding documentation and reporting.
